Confirm current requirements first
Identification rules can differ by jurisdiction and notarial act. Share the document type and signing location when scheduling so the current DC or Maryland requirements can be confirmed.
- Use current, government-issued identification when required.
- Make sure the name on the identification reasonably matches the document.
- Do not rely on an expired or damaged credential without confirming acceptability first.
The signer must participate directly
The signer must appear, communicate directly with the notary, show willingness and demonstrate awareness of the transaction. A family member, caregiver or attorney may coordinate access but cannot answer in place of the signer.
Credible witnesses
Some circumstances may allow credible witnesses under applicable law. This is fact-specific and must be discussed before the appointment; do not arrange witnesses based only on general online information.
