Use a completed document
Obtain the document from an attorney or other appropriate source before scheduling. DCMD does not draft, select or interpret wills, powers of attorney or directives.
Confirm formalities with the preparer
Ask the document preparer which signers, witnesses and notarial acts are required in the signing jurisdiction.
- Do not pre-sign unless instructed.
- Confirm names match identification.
- Arrange independent witnesses if required.
- Choose a time when the signer can participate comfortably.
Protect signer independence
The notary must communicate directly with the signer. Pressure, coaching or attempts to answer for the signer may prevent the notarization from proceeding.
