General information only. This guide is not legal advice and may not reflect every document or jurisdiction. Confirm current DC or Maryland requirements before signing.
Signer readiness comes first
The signer must be alert, willing and able to communicate directly. If medication, treatment or fatigue affects awareness, coordinate a more suitable time with the care team and document preparer.
Coordinate facility access
Confirm the facility name, building, unit, room, visitor policy, parking and a reliable on-site contact.
- Ask whether witnesses are permitted and available.
- Have identification and the unsigned document ready.
- Allow privacy for direct communication with the signer.
Separate notarization from legal advice
The notary verifies identity and completes the requested notarial act. Document selection, capacity determinations and legal advice belong to appropriate professionals.
